Custom Solutions in Practice: An Interview with Project Engineer Pascal
What makes custom-built solutions so interesting? The challenge and the solution. Developing a custom UVC-solution involves much more than simply selecting the right lamps. From limited installation space to moving components and strict safety requirements, every project presents its own unique technical challenges.
"No two projects are the same," says Pascal, Project Engineer at Bioclimatic. "We always start by understanding the customer's situation. Only then can we determine what the right solution should look like."
Many projects begin during the sales process with an initial concept or preliminary design. Once an order is confirmed, the engineering phase starts, during which every detail is worked out.
Mechanical constructions, electrical controls, safety systems and integration into existing processes all need to be carefully coordinated. Components are selected, materials are ordered and production is scheduled. Step by step, the initial concept evolves into a fully engineered installation.
Modern 3D design software makes it possible to develop installations with a high degree of precision. However, reality can sometimes be more complex than a digital model.
"Everything may appear to fit perfectly on a computer screen," says Pascal. "But once you're on site, you may encounter obstacles that aren't shown in the drawings. That's why accurate photographs, technical drawings or on-site measurements are essential. You always have to take the actual situation into account."
Depending on the project, installations are either measured on site in advance or developed using detailed drawings provided by the customer. This helps minimise surprises during installation and ensures the final design matches the real-world situation as closely as possible.
Safety is always a top priority when working with UVC technology. Although UVC light is highly effective for disinfection, it must be completely shielded from employees and operators.
"Designing an installation with multiple UVC lamps is often not the most difficult part," Pascal explains. "The real challenge is ensuring the light is safely contained, especially when moving components are involved. The installation must remain safe to operate without compromising its disinfection performance."
A good example is a custom-built UVC frame developed for an industrial bakery. Retractable drawers, power cables and electronic ballasts all had to be integrated into a compact construction. Particularly in conveyor systems and other applications with moving components, this requires smart engineering solutions.
"In the end, you simply want to deliver a great product," says Pascal. "An installation that is technically sound, professionally finished and reliable for years to come."
